Sophie Andersson
Compliance & Editorial LeadThese folks actually read the fine print and can tell you with certainty that they've verified all licence numbers against the Ontario Government Gaming Registry or other equivalent authority. Changes to terms and conditions are picked up in a flash. This detail-orientated folk would never list a casino promotion with terms that change hours after they are posted.
How She Ended Up Reading Fine Print for a Living
Sophie's background includes content editing and legal document review. As a freelancer for a number of publications including those that review investment products, she had to become wary of contracts that sound perfectly innocuous but have a sting in the tail.
Casino T&Cs: A Goldmine of Caveats. I love searching for caveats in Casino T&Cs. Phrases like: * the promotional offer is made at the casino's discretion * wagering requirements may change over time and at the casino's discretion * wagering requirements on certain games may change at any time If you spot any of these – like Sophie did – congratulations: you've found the terms that let casinos change the rules of a promo whenever they like.
MARCUS: We need a copy reader who actually enjoys reading fine print. Anyone that signs up for this job is crazy. JAMES: Short list of people. Sophie is fine with tiny print.
What Sophie Actually Does at CasinoEnjoyer
Licence verification
So as not to mess things up for you (or any of our other players) Sophie makes sure to research any new casino that wants to be listed on here by checking the licence number in the public registry made available by the casino's regulator. So for MGA casinos, the numbers are verified against the MGA database, and for Ontario casinos they are verified against the iGaming Ontario database. No verification means no casino on here. Simple as that. And of course she re-verifies the licence status during our quarterly audit.
Bonus terms audit
All the bonuses listed here have been checked and verified by Sophie, who makes sure the information is as up-to-date and accurate as possible. The terms of the terms and conditions document are thoroughly read to ensure that the information is extracted correctly: the bonus wagering formula (whether the terms specify only bonus or both the bonus and the deposit); the game weightings and contributions table (also as specified in the terms and conditions); the maximum acceptable wager per spin; any cashout limitations, also as confirmed in the terms and conditions; and, where possible, the time period that the promotion will run for, as well as any exclusions (for example excluded games or payment methods) - again, confirmed in the terms and conditions. All this is then made available in the review to be of maximum relevant use to players, as opposed to merely marketing information.
Ongoing monitoring
Casino terms and conditions change. Sometimes they tell us; more often than not they don't. Here, Sophie's expertise is keeping an eye on the casino terms and conditions of the casinos we list to ensure any changes impact the review score or any of the bonus details that we show. So in the instance of a casino upping the wagering requirement for example from 25x to 35x bingo stake without notifying players, we are on it so you don't have to be.
Everything published on this site
Nothing goes live here on CasinoEnjoyer without a Sophie stamp of approval. All information is thoroughly checked, validated and vetted for accuracy and consistency. She researches and validates numbers and facts, in addition to writing a large proportion of the content that you find on the site – the guides, as well as the breakdowns and explanations you find on wagering terms, game contribution rates and how to decide whether a promotion is good or not.
The Phrases That Make Her Slow Down
Almost everyone just skims the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) heading and moves on. Sophie, however, actually reads the fine print. Here are the warning words she looks out for:
"At the casino's sole discretion"
Casino can cancel, modify, suspend or terminate the bonus offer at its sole discretion. And if it's in the T&C for a bonus, the terms are not worth the paper they're written on. Casino can adjust them as they see fit, whenever they see fit.
"Wagering contributions may vary"
This is how casinos quietly reduce how much certain games count toward clearing your bonus. Without a fixed contribution table, any game could suddenly count 0% and you'd have no grounds to argue.
"Maximum winnings from promotional play"
The cashout cap. Hidden away as it often is, it might be expressed as a multiple of the bonus (5x), or as a flat amount. Regardless, knowing what it is before you begin is crucial, because starting to play without this knowledge is like building a large winnings reserves before discovering what portion of it may not be cashed out.
"Promotion available on selected games only"
This condition is here to stay, as far as we can see. No one has a list of which games are included or excluded, so in practice it can always be applied retroactively to block a pay-out. Sophie will only accept this term if the casino includes a complete and transparent exclusion list at the time of claiming a bonus.
